Abstract High yields of viable pea protoplasts were produced from suspension cultured cells derived from calli formed from embryogenic tissues or leaves and the conditions for the optimum expression of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) fused to the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase gene of Pisum sativum (pPAL1-15) were investigated by transient assay after electroporation. A fungal elicitor isolated from a pea pathogen, Mycosphaerella pinodes, and the reduced from of glutathione induced the expression of PAL promoter but orthovanadate, a plasma membrane ATPase inhibitor, considerably suppressed the gene expression. Rice protoplasts were also prepared from the suspension cultured cells derived from embryonic tissues, and the effects of elicitors on the expression of CAT in pPAL1-15-electroporated rice protoplasts were examined. No distinctive induction of CAT activity was observed by the treatment of rice protoplasts with a chitosan oligomer elicitor.

Abstract With regards to the origin and evolution of the Pleistocene tracts (Lalmai, Madhupur and Barind tracts) of Bangladesh, two trends of thoughts are common. Most of the authors believed that the Madhupur, Barind and Lalmai tracts represent tectonically uplifted surface. Some researchers have different opinion and they believed that the Lalmai hills and the Madhupur locality represent tectonically uplifted blocks but the whole Barind tract and the major portion of the Madhuput tracts are not tectonically uplifted, rather these are originated by erossional-depositional processes. In order to solve the problems associated with origin and evolution of Pleistocene tracts of Bangladesh, further study is needed. Borehole data may be collected and fusion images can be prepared from aerial photographs and setellite images to detect netectonic imprins and geomorphological signatures of the areas. Elaborate laboratory analysis of sediment deposits, radiocarbon dating my indicate a new dimension about the origin and evolution of these tracts.

Abstract The optical properties of clouds were measured with a polarization Mie lidar during April, 2004 and investigated to categorize the particles detected by the lidar. The cloud layers were categorized into five types according to the depolarization ratios, as follows: (I) constant and small (less than 5%); increasing with height (II) nearly from 0% and (III) from about 50%; (IV) large and varying with the backscattering coefficient; and (V) sharply decreasing. This categorization of clouds enabled us to separate aerosols from clouds in a lidar signal. Comparison of the backscattering coefficients between clouds of types (I) and (II) suggested that the depolarization ratio induced by multiple scattering in dense clouds does not depend on the particle density. Estimation of the particle phase for the five cloud categories was also examined.

Abstract The structural stabilities of bulk Si, Ge, and GaAs are discussed based on the total energy evaluated by the summation of the band structure energy and the short-range repulsive potential between ions. The band structure energy is calculated by means of the simple tight-binding method. The tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit to the results of a pseude potential calculation and Harrison's model is employed to include the influence of lattice deformation. The short-range-force is assumed to be of the exponential form and parameters are determined so as to reproduce an experimental value of bulk modulus. This treatment qualitatively well describes structural properties in spite of the simple computational procedure and roughly gives the known variation of the total energy for a <100> uniaxial strain. This method is able to be applied to an investigation of the structural stabilities of superlattices, for example, a strained layer superlattice consisting of hetero-semiconductors.

Abstract There are some substances in which their hydrogen bonds are considered to play quite important roles in their ferroelectric or antiferroelectric phase transition. These ferroelectrics usually have large isotope effects in phase transition temperatures and we expect the physics of hydrogen bonds is closely related to the effects. We propose a simple model describing the isolated hydrogen bond. Based on quantum-mechanical analyses of this model, we study the difference between the behavior of a proton and a deuteron in hydrogen bonds.

Abstract A simple model for oxygen ion conduction in perovskite compounds is proposed. The potential for an oxygen ion is calculated as the sum of the long range Coulomb potential and short range repulsive potential in a cubic lattice. The activation energy is estimated as the difference in the values of potential at the barrier and at the stable site. When appropriate conditions are satisfied, the activation energy has a minimum as a function of lattice constant in accordance with recent experiments.

Abstract Demand and supply of service are complicatedly related with the balance between fixed capital and circulating capital, movement to the left or right side from a break-even point, and other factors. If there is the disproportion between demand and supply of service, the waiting line to take a service will vary, and in some cases, fixed equipment will not be employed effectively. This report presents trial manufacture of the experimental equipment for waiting line problems.

Abstract A statistical analysis is applied to find what states of "block" are dangerous from view point of traffic accident. Here, the block is defined to be an area surrounded by some major streets and is feeded by a minor street network. The accidents under study are those which occur in the whole minor street network. They are grouped into three kinds; pedestrian, vehicle and the gross accidents. And each is classified to three types according to the place where the accident occurs. At the beginning 22 variables are assumed to state a certain relationship of some states of the block with the occurrences of accidents and 12 variables are found significant finally through factor analysis. Further examination has reached several key variables that migth have something significant to cause traffic accidents in the block. The key ones are the number of lanes of street and the number of legs of intersection, especially nearly 2 lanes street and 3-leg intersection, respectively. The case study was carried out on 26 blocks sampled from Osaka City.

Abstract The remarkable development in [CT (Information and Communication Technology) was observed in the past decades that it has an increasing impact on economic and social activities in the wurld. Similarly, [CT have had a significant role in the economic growth for developed and developing countries. Therefore, no region has been more dynamic in recent years than East Asia, which is one of the most important geugraphic regions based un [CT. Addit.iunally, focusing on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita income distributions of East Asian countries in this study, it is also aimed to show that lCT and its components are closely linked with socio"economic components in macro and micro level, especially with GDP per capita components. In this regard, the Neoclassical Growth Model and its Convergence Theory are discusst'd to show the effects of [CT investments and developments as a catalyst factor that would increase the multi regional development achievements. Finally, in the light of analyses, it is observed in this study that there are some evidences for regional convergence as a weak Beta-convergence and a strong Sigma-convergence within homugeneous regions of East Asian countries in terms of GDP per capita income distributions.

Abstract Main content of this paper is to classify IQ individuals into two categories of normal and abnormal groups. It is too difficult to divide IQ individuals into two groups of normal IQ group and abnormal group because of sparse number of cases with mental retardation. Therefore, we examined a normality of 1673 IQ individuals, but a significant difference was noted for the IQ data. The lowest three mentally retarded cases of less than or equal to 59 IQ score were excluded, the IQ data then fitted to a normal distribution well. The critical value which minimizes the probability of classification is obtained on the basis on an approximate technique with regard to normality. An approximate probability of misclassification for individuals at random from mixture of two normal populations is 25.5%.
