Abstract | Numerical error in the solution of the band matrix method based on the elimination method in single precision is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the behaviour of the truncation error and the roundoff error is clarified. Some important suggestions for the useful application of the band solver are proposed by using the results of above error analysis. |

Abstract | Non-symbiotic diazotrophic systems for biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in agriculture are most promising but the possibility for the extension of nitrogen fixation by rice is still speculative. Accordingly, the present study was conducted for the Enumeration, isolation and identification of nitrogen fixing bacterial strains at seedling stage (30 days after seed sowing) in rhizosphere of rice (BR 10, Oryza sativa L.) grown in Non-Calcareous Grey Flood Plain soil of Bangladesh. The soil is classified as ‘Inceptisol’ order and ‘Aquept’ suborder. It was identified as ‘Dhamrai series’, had ‘silt’ texture, pH 7.1 and 5.5 C/N ratio. The present results of the microbial tests on the rice rhizosphere soil evinced that out of 263 isolates, only 91 were branded as nitrogen fixing organisms per gram of soil, which was about 34.6 % of the total isolates. As per selection criteria, four individual strains were considered for identification. Biochemical tests were conducted for proper identification and the selected strains were identified as Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Bacillus spp. and Azospirllum spp. |

Abstract | Okayama University has seen recently an upsurge in the number of courses taught in English. While students generally like the English-medium courses for the abundance and novelty of information available in them, they tend to show hesitance to participate, which sometimes leads to dissatisfaction with the courses. International faculty members also feel something is amiss because they do not understand why students fail to be responsive. Clearly, enhancement of student participation and mitigation of the alienating teaching experience of international faculty are challenges to effective administration of global studies. To that end, the quiet cultivation of optimal demographics for Englishmedium courses is currently the most effective strategy. |

Abstract | The current state of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) used in communication between nonnative speakers of English seems to require a change in the way English is taught and learned. However, English has still been taught and learned as a foreign language as ifit were mainly used in communication with its NSs. This article attempts to review some ofthe recent advances in ELF research and then to draw their pedagogical implications. |

Abstract | In EDM, the machining characteristics greatly depend on the energy distribution. Therefore, it is very important to clarify the energy distribution for understanding various phenomena in EDM. In this paper, the energy distribution in EDM with graphite electrode is investigated by measuring the temperatures of electrode and workpiece. Experimental analysis shows that the material removal rate depends on energy density while the electrode wear greatly depends on the adhesion of heat resolved carbon from machining fluid, and the energies distributed into electrode and workpiece are almost constant regardless of pulse duration. |

Abstract | Based on the tight-binding method, electronic bands of the mixed perovskite oxides are calculated in order to develop the electronic theory of ferroelectric phase transitions in these mixtures which are difficult to describe within the phenomenological theories. Diagonal elements of Hamiltonian matrix of parent materials are assumed to differ by 0.1eV and mixtures are simulated by lattices of supercells containing 2(3) = 8 or 3(3) = 27 unit cells randomly assigned to either material. The width of the conduction and valence bands have maxima and the band gap has a minimum at intermediate mixing ratio. Results are in agreement with those of other analyses on random systems and even 2(3)-cell computation seems to serve as a first approximation for our purpose. |

Abstract | Effects of interface fluctuations on the electronic states in semiconductor quantum dots are analyzed on the basis of numerical solutions for ground state wave functions and energy eigenvalues. It is shown that the effective volume of confinement becomes smaller than the real volume of quantum dots due to fluctuation. This effect comes from the fact that the wave functions with larger characteristic wavelength are not able to deform themselves following the fluctuation of interfaces exactly. |

Abstract | Quantum mechnical electron wave transfer between two quantum wires which are weakly coupled via a thin potential barrier is considered. The total electronic states are calculated with both analytical ( no field case ) and numerical methods ( under applied electric fields ). The transfer efficiency is evaluated for several specified cases of geometrical structures, potential barrier heights and the externally applied electric field. Estimated trasfer time is of the order of one picosecond in typical mesoscopic structures. The model in this paper can be used to determine important structure parameters for experiments on electron directional coupler controled by external elctric field. |

Abstract | We present a real-space, polynomial-expansion approach to electron dynamics in nanostructured semiconductors. The Chebyshev expansion method is employed for efficient calculation of timeevolution of single-electron wave function. Details of the formulation are described. The method is applied to the electron transport in nanostructured semiconductors such as Si nanowires. The mean-square displacement and diffusivity of electron in Si chains are obtained as functions of length of the chains. The results show clearly ballistic behavior of electron in the pure Si chain. |

Abstract | An equation on the current-polarization voltage characteristics of single charge transfer redox reaction on a rotating disk electrode (RDE) was given and a curvefitting method to determine kinetic parameters from an observed polarization curve was proposed therefrom. The method was demonstrated for Fe(2+)/Fe(3+)redox reaction in acidic aqueous electrolyte on Pt-RDE and the limitation of the method was discussed. The extension of the method to multistep charge transfer reaction was also considered. |

Abstract | Basic kinetic equations of chronopotentiometric potential-time curves, in which the equations for reversible, quasi-reversible and irreversible electron transfer process appeared in special cases, were given and a chronopotentiometric method for determining kinetic parameters was proposed therefrom. The method was demonstrated for Fe(3+)/Fe(2+) redox reaction in acidic aqueous media. The limitations of the method and the double-layer charging effects on the potential-time curve were discussed. The extension of the method to more general electrode processes was also considered. |
