抄録 The aim of this paper is to propose new automatic mesh generator for the finite element analysis of threedimensional structures consisted of plates and beams. The strategy of the proposed one is as followings; Firstly, subdivide the structure into two-dimensional and one-dimensional structural components. Secondly, generate mesh pattern for each of them, and finally combine them so that they reconstruct the original configuration. By using the proposed method the modeling of, for example, steel bridge structures for Finite Element Analysis is easily and also fastly completed. Some examples of the application of the proposed method are presented, and from the examination of the results further important informations for the design of better method are also given in this paper.

抄録 Nested dissection method is an elimination method for a set of linear algebraic equations with minimum fillins. Physically it divides a domain into four subdomains, and each subdomain is again divided into four. This procedure is repeated till all nodes are included in some subdomains. Using this characteristic, the authors examine the efficiency of the method on the transputer.

抄録 This paper presents an effective solver for a large sparse set of linear algebraic equations, which appears at the application of the finite element and the finite difference methods in engineering field. Proposed method is a family of SKYLINE METHOD, and for faster computation on the vector processors the original skyline is modified with respect to following three items; the use of inner products of matrix operations, the removal of unnecessary numerical operations and the introduction of two-dimensional array for storing the data of coefficient matrix.

抄録 This paper includes a solver for a large sparse set of linear algebraic equations which are obtained by the application of the finite element method to static structural problems. Proposed method is a modification of Robust Incomplete Choleski-Conjugate Gradient Method, which belongs to Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method suitable for supercomputers. Through a number of numerical experiments the authors show that Robust Incomplete Choleski-Conjugate Gradient Method sometimes fails in to obtain the solutions, secondly they clarify the reason of the failures from the theoretical viewpoint, and finally they propose a modification of the robust method by the introduction of the theoretical result. Proposed method is as effective as the original, and it can overcome the demerit of Robust Method which is clarified through numerical experiments.

抄録 The testing method of rock toughness is proposed by the international society of rock mechanics (ISRM), but the results may be influenced by the test pieces, and the details of the crack propagation and the stress intensity factors are not clarified through the testing. Also the experimental test requires tedious works for the preparation of test specimen and economical responsibility. The present study aims to simulate numerically the rock toughness testing which is proposed by ISRM. For this purpose, the authors propose a numerical method which can simulate the experimental testing, and they show the propriety of the proposed method by comparing the results with the experimental and other numerical methods. At the same time, they clarify the details of crack propagation behaviors in rocks, and show the change of the stress intensity factors. The proposed method is based on the displacement-type finite element method, and several techniques are introduced to obtain accurate solution of the mechanical behavior near the crack-tip area.

抄録 The study addresses the influence of bumpers as reduction measures at the bridge decks. The considered devices are steel spring, steel spring with additional viscous damper or steel spring with additional friction element. Gap between bridge decks remains. The reduction measure is placed at one end of the neighbouring girders. The considered earthquakes are the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the 1995 Kobe earthquake. For the nonlinear analysis a finite element method is used. The investigation shows that compared to the other measures the best reduction of the pounding force can be achieved with a friction device.

抄録 The homogenization method is used to model steel fiber reinforced concrete SFRC by converting the random distribution of fibers to a periodic one. The periodic distribution is chosen to hold similar properties of the composite material in both perpendicular directions to represent an average approximation for the random distribution. The material is modeled as a composite with brittle matrix and elastic fibers. Two patterns of the unit cell are examined to establish the homogenized stiffiness matrix in elastic and plastic stages. A rigid plastic bonding is considered between matrix and fibers. The smeared crack model is used to represent the nonlinearity of concrete. The validity of the homogenized model is examined by comparing the numerical results with the experimental results. The results show good agreement with the experimental work when a suitable pattern of the unit cell is used.

抄録 The simulation of mechanical bahavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete SFRC is introduced utilizing the homogenization method. The random distribution of fibers has been converted to a periodic distribution. Using the periodicity assumption, the boundary conditions for the unit cell are derived. The homogenized stiffness matrix is determined in elastic and plastic range. A numerical example to study the effect of the volume fraction of fibers is introduced.

抄録 CAD system is useful to define and input any artificial 3-dimensional configuration into computer, but the input of arbitrary natural 3-dimensional configuration is still serious for computer users. This paper includes a method to input arbitrary 3-dimensional configuration into computer. The method is based on 3-dimensioanl Delaunay triangulation which is a geometrical subdivision of arbitrary 3-dimensional convex domain into tetrahedra, and the auther shows a method to find triangles which cover whole surface of 3-dimensional body using the result of Delaunay triangulation.

抄録 Near source earthquakes can produce strong vertical ground motions with large amplitude and high frequency content. In this paper the axial ductility behavior of RC columns due to near source earthquakes is investigated. The column is simplified to a SDOF system that only describes vertical vibrations of a structural column. The gravity load effect is represented by a pre-load. An elasto-plastic model accounting for different stiffness and strength in tension and compression is used in the analysis. The ductility demand as well as pseudo acceleration spectra are evaluated. The investigation shows that strong vertical ground motions should be considered in seismic design. From the results of this investigation suggestions for a seismic design in case of near source earthquakes can be derived.

抄録 Delaunay triangulation, a geometric subdivision of any convex domain, is often used as a finite element modeling method, but there are still several problems, which originally come from the characteristics of Delaunay triangulation. One problem appears when we remove some nodes which are already introduced for the triangulation. In this case we aim to obtain the triangulation without nodes by partial modification of the Delaunay triangulation with the node. Another problem occurs when tetrahedra with zero volume are generated by Delaunay triangulation. In this case they must be removed for the numerical analysis in order to guarantee the numerical stability and good numerical solutions. In this paper these two problems occuring at the use of Delaunay triangulation are theoretically discussed.
